What is the EPSO Numerical Reasoning Test?
The EPSO numerical reasoning test measures your ability to interpret and analyse numerical data presented in tables, bar charts, line charts, and pie charts. Each question provides a data visualisation โ such as a bar chart showing budget allocations or a nested table of population statistics โ and asks you to calculate a specific value, percentage change, ratio, or trend.
This is not a maths test in the traditional sense. You won't need advanced algebra or calculus. The challenge lies in quickly extracting the right data from complex visuals, performing basic arithmetic (percentages, ratios, averages, compound calculations), and doing so under strict time pressure. No calculator is provided in the real exam.

Top 5 Tips for EPSO Numerical Reasoning
Read the question before the data
Know what you're looking for before diving into a complex table or chart. This prevents you from getting lost in irrelevant numbers.
Check units and scales carefully
Charts may use different units (thousands, millions, percentages). A common trap is calculating with the wrong scale. Always verify the axis labels and footnotes.
Estimate before calculating
For many questions, a rough estimate eliminates 2-3 wrong answers immediately. If options are 12%, 24%, 48%, 96% โ and you estimate roughly 25%, the answer is likely 24%.
Watch for 'closest to' phrasing
Many EPSO questions ask for the value 'closest to' a calculation. Don't waste time seeking exact precision โ a quick approximation is often sufficient.
Memorise key percentage shortcuts
Know that 10% is easy to find (move the decimal), 5% is half of 10%, 25% is a quarter, 33% is a third. These mental shortcuts save crucial seconds.
Sample Question Format
EPSO numerical questions always include a data visual. Here's an example of the format you'll encounter.
A bar chart shows EU agency budgets (in โฌ millions) for 2023: Frontex 845, Europol 210, EFSA 135, EMA 420, EUIPO 490. Question: What percentage of the total budget of these five agencies does EMA represent?
Total = 845 + 210 + 135 + 420 + 490 = 2,100. EMA share = 420 / 2,100 = 20.0%. Answer: B.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many numerical reasoning questions are on the EPSO exam?โผ
The EPSO CBT includes 10 numerical reasoning questions to be completed in 20 minutes. That gives you exactly 2 minutes per question โ tight, but manageable with practice.
Can I use a calculator during the EPSO numerical test?โผ
No. EPSO does not allow calculators during the pre-selection CBT. All calculations must be done mentally or with pen and paper (provided at the test centre). This is why estimation skills are so important.
What level of maths do I need for EPSO numerical reasoning?โผ
Basic arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, and averages. The difficulty is not in the maths itself but in reading complex data quickly and choosing the right numbers to work with.
How can I improve my speed on numerical reasoning?โผ
Practice regularly under timed conditions. Learn mental maths shortcuts for percentages and ratios. Focus on reading charts efficiently โ identify what data you need before looking at the visual. EPSO Genius tracks your speed per question so you can measure your improvement.
