CAST CBT Format

What is the CAST selection?

CAST (Contract Agent Selection Tool) is EPSO's procedure for selecting contract agents. Unlike AD5 competitions for permanent officials, CAST focuses exclusively on three reasoning tests delivered via Computer-Based Testing (CBT).

Your scores on these 3 eliminatory tests determine whether you make the reserve list. There is no EU Knowledge test, no Digital Skills test, and no written essay — just pure reasoning ability.

The 3 Reasoning Tests

Know exactly what you'll face

Eliminatory

Verbal Reasoning

20 questions 35 minutes

Reading comprehension based on short passages drawn from EU-style policy texts. You must determine whether statements are true, false, or cannot be determined from the text.

Eliminatory

Numerical Reasoning

10 questions 20 minutes

Data interpretation using tables, charts, and statistical data. Five answer options are provided — you need to extract information and calculate under time pressure.

Eliminatory

Abstract Reasoning

10 questions 10 minutes

Pattern recognition sequences using shapes, symbols, and transformations. No language or numerical knowledge needed — pure logical thinking.

The exact number of questions and time limits may vary by CAST vacancy notice.

Study Timeline

How long does it take?

Most candidates see meaningful improvement after 4-8 weeks of consistent daily practice. Here's a proven approach:

1

Take the diagnostic

Start with a free diagnostic test to identify your baseline score and weak areas across all 3 reasoning types.

4-8 weeks
2

Daily practice

30-60 minutes per day. Focus on your weakest area first — verbal reasoning improves fastest with daily reading drills.

3

Exam simulations

Once scores stabilise, switch to full exam simulations to build stamina and time management under real conditions.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What tests are in the EPSO CAST selection?

CAST computer-based tests include Verbal Reasoning (20 questions), Numerical Reasoning (10 questions), and Abstract Reasoning (10 questions). There is no EU Knowledge test, no Digital Skills test, and no essay.

Can I use CAST preparation for AD5?

Yes. The verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning tests are the same format across EPSO competitions including AD5 and CAST. Practicing for one directly improves your score in the other.

How is CAST different from AD5?

CAST selects contract agents (temporary staff), while AD5 selects permanent officials. CAST tests only the 3 reasoning types. AD5 also tests EU Knowledge, Digital Skills, and includes a written essay (EUFTE). You can upgrade from CAST to full AD5 prep for €24.

Is there an Assessment Centre for CAST?

This varies by competition. Some CAST selections include an interview or structured assessment; others are CBT-only. The official vacancy notice for each CAST competition specifies the full procedure.

How long does it take to prepare?

Most candidates see meaningful improvement after 4-8 weeks of consistent daily practice (30-60 minutes/day). Verbal reasoning improves fastest with daily reading and comprehension drills.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — all new accounts get a 7-day free trial with full access. After that, you can choose the CAST plan at €45 or the full Pro plan at €69 for all 5 test types.
